European countries join forces to launch GreenMob, the multimodal journey planner for sustainable travel

  • GreenMob is a multimodal journey planner for sustainable travel. It provides a certified CO2 emissions calculator with automatic transport mode recognition integrated into a Mobility as a Service (MaaS) platform empowering consumers to make informed decisions about their travel choices.
  • Objectives: reduce CO2 emissions, promote sustainable and eco-friendly transportation, increase sustainability awareness and data.
  • In May 2024, it will undergo testing in three European cities: Viladecans (Spain), Debrecen (Hungary), and Cesena (Italy), with plans for commercialization by the end of the year.
  • GreenMob is supported by EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union.

A new initiative is aiming at transforming urban mobility as we know it. Developed by a consortium of European partners, including the Spanish CARNET (Cooperative Automotive Research Network) and Ajutament de Viladecans, the French Instant System, the Italian Wecity, Start Romagna and Comune di Cesena, and the Hungarian Debrecen Exclusive Public Transport Company (DKV), and supported by EIT Urban Mobility an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union,  GreenMob is a multimodal journey planner for sustainable travel.

The project aims at reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions produced by motorised trips, promoting sustainable and eco-friendly transportation, and increasing sustainability awareness and data. Thanks to a certified CO2 emissions calculator developed by Wecity and integrated into a Mobility as a Service (MaaS) platform, this user-friendly interface calculates and shows CO2 emissions associated with any city trips.

“By integrating various modes of transport providing comprehensive information on routes, schedules, fares, and updates in real-time, as well as the innovative integration of a CO2 monitoring tool that automatically recognises the mode of transport used and calculates emissions, GreenMob allows consumers to make informed decisions, thereby contributing to a cleaner and greener future”, commented María Paula Caycedo, Head of Innovation Hub South

The GreenMob project will soon be tested in the cities of Viladecans (Spain), Debrecen (Hungary), and Cesena (Italy), with the aim of determining the feasibility and effectiveness of the solution. The testing phase, starting in May 2024, will involve pilot definition and testing, technical adjustments, integration, among other tasks, to be finally ready to go to market by the end of the year with an official presentation event in Debrecen.

Key Features of GreenMob:

  • Multimodal journey planner providing comprehensive information on routes, schedules, fares, and updates in real-time.
  • Innovative CO2 monitoring tool that automatically recognizes the mode of transport used and calculates emissions.
  • User-friendly interface to increase awareness and support ecologically responsible transportation options for city travel.

“Over 70% of EU citizens live in urban areas – cities, towns and suburbs – that generate 23% of all transport greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative falls in the framework of the European Union to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and by 90% by 2050. The challenge of future mobility will be addressed by improving accessibility and providing efficient service and vehicle management; fostering European-wide interoperability across systems by integrating public and commercial mobility services.”, concluded María Paula Caycedo, Head of Innovation Hub South.

Partners’ Main Contributions:

  • CARNET: Overall project management and coordination, pilot definition and testing.
  • Instant System: Technical adjustments and integration, intellectual property rights (IPR), exploitation, and scalability.
  • Wecity: Technological partner, creator of the CO2 emissions calculator.
  • Start Romagna: Implementation of a MaaS application, integration with Wecity’s gamification platform.
  • Comune di Cesena and Ajutament de Viladecans: Pilot definition and testing.
  • Debrecen Exclusive Public Transport Company (DKV): Technical adjustments and integration, pilot definition and testing.

The GreenMob project represents a significant step towards achieving sustainable urban mobility and reducing environmental impact. By leveraging innovative technologies and collaborative efforts, the project aims to revolutionize the way people travel in cities, ultimately leading to cleaner, greener, and more livable urban environments.
