The ROADSCOR project, under the title FIA Risk-Based Road Scores, has won recognition in the mobility projects category of the 2026 World Smart City Awards for its data-driven approach to safer urban roads.

Cities need to identify road safety risks before crashes happen. The ROADSCOR project, led by Roadscor and supported by EIT Urban Mobility, is helping make this possible by turning traffic simulations into actionable risk assessments that enable cities to evaluate road designs and prioritise safety improvements.

The project’s results have now contributed to international recognition for the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), which won the mobility projects category at the 2026 World Smart City Awards under the title FIA Risk-Based Road Scores.

The 2026 awards received a record-breaking 533 proposals from 68 countries, highlighting the international reach of the competition and the importance of projects, solutions and city strategies that drive change and improve urban life.

Turning traffic simulations into safer road designs

Traditional road safety assessments often rely on historical crash data and video analysis of near-misses. While these approaches provide valuable insights, they can make it difficult for cities to identify and address risks before incidents occur.

Roadscor takes a proactive approach. Its methodology uses digital models of urban intersections to simulate possible interactions between road users and identify potentially dangerous traffic conflicts. It then quantifies the risks, helping traffic engineers assess the safety implications of different road designs and proposed interventions before implementing them.

During the ROADSCOR project, the consortium assessed intersections in Hasselt, Belgium; and Verona and Rome, Italy. Each assessment involved between 4,000 and 40,000 simulations, typically identifying more than 100 potential conflicts.

These insights help cities make more informed decisions about infrastructure design, prioritise interventions and better protect vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.

Collaboration driving road safety innovation

The award recognises the collective work behind the project. FIA led the global vision and advocacy, while Roadscor and its project partners contributed to developing and validating the approach.

The consortium brought together complementary expertise from Roadscor, Aimsun, Haskoning and Siemens Digital Industries Software, working alongside FIA to advance data-driven road safety assessment.

Supported by EIT Urban Mobility, the project progressed the Roadscor solution towards commercial deployment, demonstrating how simulation-based risk analysis can support practical decisions by traffic engineers and road authorities.

Supporting safer, more sustainable urban mobility

Safer infrastructure is essential to achieving Vision Zero: reducing road fatalities by 50% by 2030 and eliminating them by 2050. By helping cities assess risks before crashes happen, Roadscor offers a way to move beyond reactive road safety measures towards prevention and evidence-based planning.

The recognition at the World Smart City Awards highlights the value of collaboration between technology providers, industry and innovation partners in addressing urban mobility challenges. It demonstrates how innovation projects can help technological advances can be translated into practical solutions that support safer streets and more sustainable urban mobility.
