Hydrogen is increasingly recognised as a vital solution for decarbonising transport, especially in sectors where battery-electric alternatives have limitations. A prime example of this shift is EVARM, a Catalan company advancing hydrogen fuel cell technology for heavy-duty vehicles.

During a recent visit to EVARM’s facilities in Sant Fost de Campsentelles, Pol Gibert, the Secretary General for Business and Labour of the Government of Catalonia, commended the company’s innovative work. Central to their efforts is the HERO project, which aims to convert diesel minibuses into zero-emission, hydrogen-powered vehicles, showcasing how technology can provide cleaner alternatives for public transport.

Hydrogen-powered vehicles offer significant advantages, particularly for larger fleets that need quick refuelling and extended range. This makes them particularly suitable for logistics and regional transport sectors, which can be challenging to electrify. EVARM’s initiatives are addressing this challenge and promoting a transition towards a cleaner transport ecosystem.

As a Silver Partner of EIT Urban Mobility, EVARM is also actively engaged in collaborative projects that support Europe’s green transition.
The HERO project embodies their commitment to scalable and forward-thinking solutions that contribute to environmental goals throughout the continent. This endeavour is part of the Hydrogen Valley of Catalonia, a regional initiative that unites public and private stakeholders to accelerate hydrogen innovation and the adoption of new technologies. The support from Catalan authorities is crucial in ensuring that local innovations contribute meaningfully to broader European sustainability efforts.

Hydrogen fuel cells are increasingly recognised as a viable solution for reducing emissions in the transport sector. With companies like EVARM and initiatives such as EIT Urban Mobility leading the way, Catalonia is making significant strides toward building a more sustainable future.
