Official launch of M3 data space: a key project for the digital transformation of the territory

Led by AMB informació and with the support of EIT Urban Mobility, the proposal was born from the need to create a Metropolitan Data Space that responds to and provides solutions to the needs of current developments in data management in the metropolitan field of the city of Barcelona.

Last month of December 2024 marked the launch meeting of the M3 Data Space project, Metropolitan Multimodal Mobility, a key initiative aimed at establishing an ecosystem of interconnected and secure data spaces to promote the efficient and competitive management of mobility data within the metropolitan area of Barcelona.

During the launch meeting held at the AMB Information offices in Barcelona, the foundations were laid for the project’s development, which will be executed by June 2026. Participants discussed strategic priorities and technologies involved in ensuring data’s responsible and secure use.

The M3 Data Space project aims to transform metropolitan mobility by creating a collaborative data ecosystem involving public and private administrations. The project’s primary objectives are to establish this ecosystem to enable the exchange and utilization of data while also enhancing governance mechanisms. This will lead to more transparent, secure, and efficient management of mobility systems.

To support these goals, the project will ensure that data adheres to European standards, promoting interoperability and facilitating integration with similar initiatives at the European level. Furthermore, the project encourages intermodality and sustainable mobility by incentivizing users to shift from private vehicles to public transport.
With these objectives, the M3 Data Space project aligns with the priorities of digital transformation and sustainability, establishing itself as an essential tool to address the mobility challenges within the metropolitan area of Barcelona.

Next Steps

The next steps of the project include the development of the two identified use cases: the ZBE case, which involves expanding the range of information variables related to the various Low Emission Zones (ZBE) and other restricted-access areas for private vehicles, to enable their integration into public and private route planners via Open Data; and the so-called BUS AI case, which will facilitate descriptive and predictive analysis of the demand for metropolitan bus services through the adaptation of data sets.

Participating entities

The M3 project, funded by the Ministry of Digital Transformation and Public Administration through European Union Next Generation EU funds, will last for a year and a half, ending in June 2026. It brings together key public and private partners, including technology companies, research institutions, public administrations, and civil society organisations. Led by AMB Informació, the project involves EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union, along with i2CAT, IESE, and ITM. This multidisciplinary collaboration seeks to leverage the capabilities and expertise of all stakeholders involved.

The M3 project is a flagship example of how digital transformation can drive sustainable development and social cohesion in an increasingly interconnected world.
