Urban Mobility and Healthy Ageing – Innovations for a Sustainable Future Summer School

Creating more inclusive and sustainable cities as populations age.
 

Dates: 23 June to 4 July 2025

Cities: Lisbon (Portugal) & Barcelona (Spain)

Partners: University of Lisbon, Polytechnic University of Catalonia

The Urban Mobility and Healthy Ageing Summer School aims to equip international master’s students in Urban Mobility with the skills to design, develop, and implement solutions that promote health and functional independence for individuals with reduced mobility or those at risk of mobility decline in urban environments. The entry school will introduce participants to the most relevant topics in ageing, with a focus on functional aspects, particularly intrinsic capacity, and identify the need for solutions to address the impact of ageing on urban mobility. The exit school will then guide participants through the development of these identified solutions, with the support of a mentorship process.

Expected Impact:

  • Short-term: Increased awareness and understanding of healthy ageing and urban mobility among participants.
  • Medium-term: Creation of innovative, student-led solutions addressing urban mobility needs.
  • Long-term: Contribution to more inclusive and sustainable cities, improving the quality of life for ageing populations.

Preliminary programme

Week 1: Problem Analysis – Lisbon
Visits to locations and case studies addressing mobility challenges faced by older people.
Data collection and stakeholder engagement with urban planners, transportation authorities, and ageing communities.
Collaborative efforts to define problem statements and pinpoint key areas for innovation.

Week 2: Problem-Solving and Pitch Event – Barcelona
Workshops for collaborative innovation to develop feasible mobility solutions.
Mentorship from industry experts, startups, and academia.
Prototype development and business model creation.
Investor pitch event, where participants present their solutions to a panel of experts.

Resilient Cities Summer School

Learn about resident city concepts through challenge-based learning.
 

Dates: 7 to 18 July 2025

Cities: Bratislava (Slovakia) & Ljubljana (Slovenia)

Partners: Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, University of Ljubljana, Kimitisik B.V

This Summer School is part of the Central Europe Summer School project. It unites students, professionals, and anyone interested in resilient city concepts through challenge-based learning. We address urban challenges head-on through engaging sessions and partnerships with mobility companies.

Preliminary programme

From Monday to Friday, participants start with a morning drill and mini pitch, followed by sessions on urban mobility, business challenges, and expert talks. Afternoons focus on project development, workshops, and pitch preparation, leading up to a final business panel presentation. The weekend is dedicated to transferring to the second city (Ljubljana) and includes free time before continuing the programme. Evenings throughout the week feature social activities and networking to enhance the experience.

Remaking the Street Summer School

A blended learning experience based on experiential learning principles geared towards impact.
 

Dates: 13 to 26 July 2025

Cities: Munich (Germany) & Rotterdam (Netherlands)

Partners: Technical University of Munich, Humankind

During this two-week programme, you will be partaking in 4 modules:

  • Modules 1 and 2 online at your own pace
  • Module 3 in-presence in Munich, Germany at the Technical University of Munich
  • Module 4 in-presence in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, with Humankind.

During these 4 modules, you will witness and learn about the extraordinary experiments that European cities have implemented to transform their streets. Academics, professionals, and community experts will be your guides to reimagining the street. By learning key academic materials online, much of your time in Rotterdam and Munich will be spent learning outside of the classroom, with experts who will take you around the city by cycling, walking, and taking public transit to showcase key locations that were transformed by street experiments.  

Preliminary programme

The Summer School follows a Monday-Friday schedule, with morning lectures, workshops, or guest speakers, followed by site visits in the afternoon. Evenings are free for personal time or networking. The highlights of the Summer School are 1-Day Interventions in both Munich and Rotterdam, where you will participate in the implementation of a street experiment. Weekends are dedicated to free time and travel between locations. A detailed programme will be confirmed later.

Smart Cities Summer School

Shaping the future of liveable, green, and connected cities.
 

Dates: 10 to 22 August 2025

Cities: Tartu (Estonia) & Riga (Latvia)

Partners: Riga Technical University, University of Tartu, Kimitisik B.V

This Summer School empowers students and professionals to develop smart, sustainable mobility solutions through innovation & entrepreneurship. Backed by EIT Urban Mobility, it bridges the knowledge gap, fosters real-world problem-solving, and expands learning opportunities. With challenge-based learning and new university partnerships, we’re shaping the future of liveable, green, and connected cities.

Preliminary programme

The Summer School follows a Monday-Friday schedule, starting with morning drills and mini pitches, followed by sessions on urban mobility, business challenges, and expert talks. Afternoons focus on project work, workshops, and mentoring, with evening activities included. The weekend is dedicated to travel and free time, as participants move from Tartu to Riga. In the second week, activities shift towards proposal development, pitch preparation, and IP strategy sessions, culminating in a final pitch to a business panel on Friday, followed by awards and farewell.
