The European Union has reinforced its commitment to the New European Bauhaus, or NEB, with the publication of a new European Commission Communication and an accompanying Council Recommendation. The two documents set out how the initiative will scale up across Europe and clearly recognise the EIT Community New European Bauhaus, led by EIT Urban Mobility, as a key partner in turning the vision into action.

Launched in 2021, the New European Bauhaus is a creative and cross-disciplinary initiative inviting people across Europe to shape places that are sustainable and inclusive. Inspired by the original Bauhaus movement, it adds a strong cultural and human dimension to the European Green Deal, focusing on how the green transition is experienced in everyday life.

The new EU policy framework confirms that the NEB is a long-term transformation agenda. It emphasises the importance of translating Europe’s climate and sustainability goals into practical, people-centred solutions developed with citizens and delivered at local and regional level. Culture, creativity and social inclusion are highlighted as essential drivers alongside innovation.

A central message of the Communication and Council Recommendation is the explicit recognition of the EIT Community New European Bauhaus as a core delivery partner. Led by EIT Urban Mobility, the initiative supports cities, regions and local actors through 7 open calls for proposals and programmes. These programmes bolster experimentation, innovation and hands-on support, helping ideas move from concept to implementation. As part of the EIT Community, Europe’s largest innovation ecosystem, the EIT Community NEB brings together expertise from sectors including climate, food, mobility and manufacturing. Through collaboration with Climate KIC, EIT Food and EIT Manufacturing, it delivers seven dedicated programmes supporting hundreds of initiatives across Europe, from early experimentation to scaling up solutions with tangible impact.

This work has gained strong institutional attention. The EIT Community NEB 2025 Impact Report achieved wide visibility at EU decision-making level and received very positive feedback. Looking ahead, a new series of calls will launch this year, with EIT Urban Mobility coordinating opportunities such as Connect NEB, Co-create NEB and Enhance NEB.

The EU’s renewed backing sends a clear signal that creativity, innovation and citizen engagement are central to delivering a greener, fairer and more beautiful Europe.
