The rapid growth in e-bike adoption across Europe has created new challenges in bicycle security. As e-bikes become increasingly popular for urban mobility, their higher value makes them particularly attractive targets for theft. Traditional insurance and recovery methods have proven inadequate, with low recovery rates for stolen bikes. This not only causes financial losses but also discourages people from choosing bicycles as a sustainable transport option. 

VELOSAFE addresses this challenge by creating an innovative end-to-end security solution that protects e-bikes from the moment of purchase. The project integrates three key components: IoT tracking technology, digital insurance and automated recovery processes, all seamlessly bundled into the bike’s retail price through manufacturer partnerships. 

Led by IoT Venture and partnering with insurance provider Laka and bicycle manufacturer Tout Terrain, VELOSAFE revolutionises the traditional approach to bike security. Instead of requiring cyclists to separately arrange tracking devices and insurance after purchase, thesolution is pre-installed and activated at the point of sale, ensuring immediate and comprehensive protection. 

The project will develop automated systems for theft reporting, location monitoring and insurance claims processing. A key innovation is the implementation of location-based risk analysis to prevent thefts before they occur. When theft does happen, the integrated system enables rapid response and significantly higher recovery rates through automated coordination with law enforcement. 

The solution will be piloted through Tout Terrain’s dealer network in 2025, with the first comprehensive implementation of this integrated security approach in the European bicycle market. This pilot will demonstrate how manufacturer partnerships can make sophisticated bike security accessible to all cyclists, supporting the growth of sustainable urban mobility while protecting consumers’ investments in e-bikes. 

VELOSAFE aims to set a new standard for bicycle security that can be readily adopted by other manufacturers, creating a scalable solution to protect the growing fleet of e-bikes across European cities.
