SMARTLOG - Municipal Market Micro-Logistics Service in Guimarães
Guimarães Municipal Market generates many short, uncoordinated delivery trips to restaurants and other businesses in the city centre. These trips add traffic, noise and emissions during peak hours, while vendors and recipients have limited control over delivery timing.
From July to December 2026, Carchain and the Municipality of Guimarães will pilot SMARTLOG Guimarães, a city-operated micro-logistics service using the municipality’s existing electric utility vehicle. Market vendors will request deliveries through a simple mobile app. Municipal staff will consolidate requests, apply service rules and create a daily delivery plan through an operator dashboard. The driver will receive an ordered stop list, navigation support and proof-of-delivery tools.
The system will optimise routes and vehicle loading using delivery time windows, item weight and dimensions, and vehicle capacity. Vendors and recipients will receive status updates through email or messaging where permitted.
The pilot will initially operate within one kilometre of the municipal market and will involve vendors, restaurants, municipal operators and the driver. It aims to improve delivery reliability, reduce individual vendor trips, increase vehicle utilisation and provide evidence for a replicable service that can be adopted by other municipal markets and European cities.

Guimarães’ market deliveries are fragmented and uncoordinated. The pilot will baseline five market days and initially serve destinations within one kilometre.
The project coordinates requests, consolidates loads, plans feasible routes, guides the driver and tracks each delivery through one city-operated digital workflow.
At least 20 daily app requests, 90% on-time deliveries, 25% better kilometres per kilogram and 20% fewer vendor self-delivery trips.
