Road Intelligence for London Mobility (RILM)

Real-time connective vehicle data for road intelligence
Road intelligence street map

Project summary

The Mayor’s Transport Strategy outlines ambitious goals – like 80% of London trips made by foot, bike or public transport by 2041, and net-zero carbon by 2030 – yet significant challenges remain. Congestion is increasing, with drivers losing 101 hours sitting in traffic in 2024. Additionally, despite progress in reducing road deaths, 3,710 people were seriously injured or killed in 2023, mostly at junctions. And while the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has seen improvement in air quality, there is still a need to reduce emissions.

Although London faces these mobility challenges, there is a major opportunity emerging. By 2027, it is estimated that there will be over 300 million connected vehicles across the globe. The Road Intelligence for London Mobility (RILM) project aims to leverage this connected vehicle data to address the critical urban mobility challenges set out in the Mayor’s Transport Strategy.

RILM will integrate Compass IoT’s Road Intelligence solutions – a comprehensive platform and bespoke dashboards – to provide Transport for London (TfL) with real-time data, predictive analytics and actionable insights. Compass IoT will provide connected vehicle datasets alongside TfL’s bus and crash data to further inform transport planning and targeted interventions for better mobility. Overall, the project aims to enhance road safety through near-miss, g-force and speed analytics to target and assess safety interventions for vulnerable road users and identify high-risk areas. Additionally, the project looks to optimise public transport by analysing bus data for junction analysis, service time improvements and traffic signal optimisation, and utilise traffic data to improve signage for better network performance.

Context

RILM aims to transform London mobility, providing actionable insights and metrics to target and improve high-risk areas, bus services and congestion.

Challenge

The project will build bespoke dashboards and utilise Compass IoT’s Road Intelligence platform to empower TfL to make data-driven decisions that support the Mayor’s Transport Strategy.

Expected outcome

RILM is expected to help enhance bus services, identify high-risk roads, and improve junction performance, contributing to a better quality of life and national targets.
