Passenger Flow Analytics in Nitra

An AI-powered solution using Wi-Fi sensors to collect anonymised boarding, alighting and occupancy data to optimise city-wide public transport planning and operations in Nitra.

Project summary

The project aims to improve the efficiency, sustainability and quality of public transport services in Nitra by providing accurate, automated and continuous passenger demand data. Today, transport operators generally rely on manual passenger counts, ticketing data or camera-based systems, which can be expensive to deploy, raise privacy concerns and require complex installation and maintenance. As a result, they often lack reliable information about passenger flows, making it difficult to optimise routes, schedules and vehicle allocation. This leads to overcrowded or underutilised services.

To address these challenges, Flowy is deploying its AI-powered passenger analytics platform, combining onboard Wi-Fi sensors with cloud-based analytics to automatically collect anonymous passenger counting, occupancy and origin-destination (OD) data. Unlike camera-based solutions, Flowy does not capture images or personal data, ensuring full general data protection regulation (GDPR) compliance while significantly simplifying installation and deployment. The platform provides transport operators with reliable, continuous and actionable insights through intuitive dashboards, helping them identify mobility patterns, monitor occupancy and make data-driven planning decisions.

The project is carried out by the City of Nitra, local bus operator Transdev and Flowy within the EIT Urban Mobility RAPTOR programme. Flowy is responsible for supplying the onboard sensing technology, deploying the solution on selected buses, providing the cloud analytics platform and supporting the technical implementation and data analysis throughout the project. The project takes place in Nitra, Slovakia. At the end of the pilot, a final demonstration will present the results to the operator and other stakeholders, showcasing passenger mobility patterns, occupancy trends, overcrowded and underutilised routes, and other actionable insights. The objective is to demonstrate how AI-powered passenger analytics can support more efficient service planning, improve the passenger experience and enable evidence-based mobility decisions.

Context

Nitra faces a data gap with only 19% of buses having counters. Relying on manual surveys prevents evidence-based planning from optimising routes and fleet allocation.

Challenge

People Flowy uses non-invasive Wi-Fi sensors and AI to collect anonymised passenger data, enabling Nitra to achieve up to 80% coverage for better transport planning.

Expected outcome

Retrieval of precise trip data, capacity mismatch identification to optimise public transport planning, improvement in passenger comfort and a 50% reduction in manual survey efforts.
