Micromobility usage uptake

Providing adequate infrastructure to promote cycling

Project summary

Dubnica nad Váhom is a city in central Slovakia with a population of around 25,000. The city’s setting is ideal for promoting higher rates of active mobility. At the time of the pilot, Dubnica nad Váhom will be building its first bicycle infrastructure with a strategic long-term objective to increase the bicycle modal share. One of the challenges will be to provide safe and accessible bicycle parking infrastructure in the wider city centre.

Startup Rastel.io’s smart bike parking solution consists of modular secure parking units and a mobile app for access control. They can be equipped with photovoltaic systems to make them energy independent and with sockets to charge e-bikes.

During the project pilot, two secure bike parking units will be developed as linkable modules that can form a hub to fit a wide range of spatial configurations. Updates to the electronic gate opening function are planned, to allow sensors to read inputs in real-time, enabling tracking and identification of suspicious behaviour. A motion detection-based surveillance camera recording inside the shelter will provide an additional layer of security. Rastel.io will also provide a digital twin model for real-time data on the gate status, battery voltage and motion detection.

The city of Dubnica nad Váhom and Rastel.io hope to continue their collaboration for an additional six months following the RAPTOR pilot.
