Everyday approximately 40,000 people commute to industrial estates outside of the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. The majority of these trips are made by private, single occupancy vehicles. The challenge addressed by this project is to optimise commuting by reducing the number of cars on the road and therefore reducing traffic congestion and carbon dioxide emissions.

French startup Karos Mobility’s carpooling app utilises artificial intelligence (AI) and geolocation to connect the best possible carpooling partners, providing optimised door-to-door itineraries. Drivers set their route in the app and wait for potential passengers to sign up, with each journey netting the driver at least €1.50 per passenger.

For Karos Mobility, this project represented its entry into the Spanish market. As part of the project, Karos Mobility onboarded eight companies across two industrial estates. In this way companies were able to play a role in lowering their employee’s commuting carbon emissions – of which 7.6 tonnes were saved during the pilot. Over the pilot, over 5,000 carpool trips were made.

Challenge

The activity addressed the decrease of single occupancy private vehicles for commuting.

Main Objective

The activity aimed to reduce the number of cars on the road by increasing vehicle occupancy rates via carpooling.

Output

The activity resulted in a carpooling app that utilises AI and geolocation to connect the best possible carpooling partners, providing optimised door-to-door commuting itineraries.
