Improving sustainable journeys in The Hague

Prompting a sustainable transport modal shift amongst beach-goers

Project summary

Scheveningen beach is a popular recreational area, especially during events and when the weather is fine. On these peak days, large visitor numbers can pose a challenge due to crowded public transportation and long traffic jams. There are several different transport connections to Scheveningen beach. To reduce CO2 emissions, The Hague’s authorities wish to remove all barriers and incentivise travellers to choose sustainable forms of transport such as bikes, public transport, shared mobility, or a combination of these.

The Kobla app nudges users towards forms of sustainable transport. The app awards points for users’ journeys according to how active and sustainable the journey is. Extra points are also awarded for active travel during rush hour or in bad weather.

During the project, Kobla will test a game-based incentive system to promote green methods of transport, with a particular focus on cycling, to encourage eco-friendly travel to the Scheveningen beach area. The Kobla app will be adapted for Dutch speakers and a beach module in the app will award people travelling sustainably to the beach with extra bonus points per visit.
