H2_DISPENSER

Decentralised green hydrogen production - enabling distributed, low cost, H2 cylinder dispensers and safe swapping stations

Project summary

The H2_Dispenser project focuses on the challenge related to the hydrogen (H2) transition in the transport field. The project will work on a new concept of distributed H2 refuelling stations that assures the optimisation of renewable energy produced at the local level and provides a clear answer to those who need a reliable H2 distribution system.

The project will demonstrate the benefit of adopting decentralised dispensers able to produce and provide an easy swappable distributor for light H2 vehicles via pilots in Modena and Thessaloniki. The project, by providing a low cost H2 refilling solution, aims to raise public awareness in green hydrogen production and will contribute to overcoming the barriers to adoption.

Project start:

1 April 2024

Project end:

31 May 2025

Budget:

€892,000

Countries

greece, italy

Context

The project aims to improve user acceptance and increase the adoption of small hydrogen vehicles that use swappable H2 cylinders.

Challenge

The project aims to address the lack of hydrogen refuelling stations, high cost of storage, low efficiency of the electrolysis process and scarce adoption of fuel cell vehicles.

Expected outcome

H2Dispenser aims to launch decentralised hydrogen dispensers able to produce and provide an easy swappable distributor for light H2 vehicles.

Impact

H2 Dispenser piloted its hydrogen dispenser solution for light H2 vehicles in Modena (Italy) and Thessaloniki (Greece). The solution provides green hydrogen produced through electrolysis by small photovoltaic (PV) installation, at industrial or energy community plants, as well as enables an easy cylinder swap refilling operation. In addition to testing the solution, the project aimed to showcase the benefit of adopting decentralised dispensers, improve user acceptance toward this new energy vector, and in the long-term increase the adoption of small hydrogen vehicles using swappable hydrogen cylinders.
