Greenroads will address the pressing challenges of urban traffic management and safety in Ghent, Belgium. The project is inspired by the citys need to efficiently manage increasing traffic volumes, reduce congestion and enhance road safety for both vehicles and pedestrians. As a forward-thinking city committed to sustainability, Ghent has partnered with Greenroads to leverage cutting-edge technology for smarter urban planning.
The project will be implemented at busy intersections across Ghent over the last two quarters of 2024. Project GreenFlow will use a combination of fixed cameras and drones to analyse data on vehicle and pedestrian behaviour. This data will be analysed using advanced Computer Vision and analytics to provide city planners with detailed insights into traffic patterns, congestion points and pedestrian flows. The primary aim is to offer a comprehensive understanding of how traffic moves through critical junctions, enabling more informed decisions in urban planning and infrastructure development.
The project will span several months, with continuous contribution and technical enhancements. The insights gained from GreenFlow will not only address immediate traffic issues but also provide a reusable data model to inform future city planning initiatives, ensuring scalability and adaptability without vendor lock-in.
Specifically designed to benefit municipalities, government institutions, traffic and road engineering companies, and urban planners, this project offers a flexible, data-driven approach to urban traffic management. By delivering actionable insights and fostering better decision-making, GreenFlow will establish Ghent as a model city for smart, sustainable urban infrastructure, paving the way for similar initiatives across Europe. The successful implementation of GreenFlow will underscore the potential of AI and data analytics in transforming how cities approach traffic management and urban planning in the 21st century. In Ghent, Greenroads' traffic analysis tool was tested at one of the city’s most complex junctions — a task that is traditionally time-consuming, manual and resource-intensive. By processing high-altitude drone video footage, Greenroads’ technology mapped the movements of cars, cyclists, and pedestrians across nearly 30 traffic paths. The output included clear visual data, such as aerial heatmaps and a dashboard that revealed friction points in mobility flow and potential safety risks. City officials can quickly gain intuitive, data-driven insights to make evidence-based decisions on where to redesign roads, add pedestrian crossings, or improve bike lanes. For this project, Greenroads adapted its software to handle drone input for the first time, unlocking potential for use in other cities, especially those seeking low-cost, high-impact tools to improve traffic safety. The solution empowers urban areas to prioritise safety, sustainability, and inclusivity in street design.
