Project summary

Bacău: Active Mobility for Seniors aims to address the mobility challenges senior citizens face in Bacău, Romania, where approximately 35% of the population is elderly .

This project is a collaboration between Hilo EV Ltd and the city of Bacău. It is inspired by the need to create an inclusive and accessible transportation system that promotes seniors’ well-being and social inclusion. By addressing the limitations of traditional transportation options in Bacău – such as physical demands, accessibility issues and affordability concerns – the project aims to reduce social isolation and enhance mobility for senior citizens. Over the long-term, the project is expected to give Bacău’s senior residents better quality of life .

The project introduces the Intelligent Road Illumination System (IRIS), a safety-centric technology designed to increase cyclist safety. IRIS provides 360-degree illumination, warning systems and real-time hazard detection using AI, making cycling safer and more appealing for senior citizens. The project will take place during the second half of 2024 and will focus on developing, testing and implementing IRIS technology on e-bicycles to encourage active mobility among the elderly.

The expected success of this initiative results from a collaborative effort by a range of stakeholders. These include local government officials, senior citizens, engineers and safety experts. The initiative aims to increase the number of seniors using bicycles, improve their confidence in cycling and promote a shift towards sustainable and active transportation modes, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for Bacău’s senior residents.
