The ACTIVA H2 project aims to make hydrogen mobility more accessible by creating a compact, modular hydrogen refuelling station (HRS) that is easier and more affordable to install.
Traditional stations are costly, complicated, and require heavy infrastructure. This often discourages operators and fleet owners from investing in hydrogen technology. Inspired by Europe’s ambitious decarbonisation targets, ACTIVA H2 introduces an innovative “HRS-as-a-Service” model, allowing businesses to rent the station and avoid high upfront costs.
The main goal is to design, build, and validate a hydrogen refuelling station that fits into just 20 square metres of space, meets European regulation (AFIR), and can serve both light and heavy-duty vehicles at 350 and 700 bar pressures. By using transportable storage units at 500 bar, the station reduces the need for large compressors and complex permitting, making it faster and easier to deploy in urban or interurban areas.
The project is led by Hidrogeno Verde Renovable (HVR), working alongside Wolftank Iberia (coordinators and technology experts) and Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft (BMW GROUP, demonstration partner). The HRS prototype will be tested at BMW’s Group facility in Miramas, France, to refuel their hydrogen vehicles, and later at Hidrogeno Verde Renovable’s site in Coslada, Spain, for testing with different vehicle types, including buses and passenger cars from partners such as AVANZA and Toyota.
Set to deliver results within 12 months, ACTIVA H2 will show how this flexible, cost-effective approach can accelerate the shift to cleaner transport across Europe, encouraging wider adoption of hydrogen-powered fleets and helping cities achieve their zero-emission mobility goals.

ACTIVA H2 addresses high-cost, large-footprint hydrogen refuelling infrastructure. Europe needs 657 stations by 2030, demanding simpler, cheaper, and more scalable solutions.
ACTIVA H2 tackles complexity and costs by providing a modular, easy-to-install hydrogen refuelling station and offering it through a flexible rental service model.
A fully operational modular HRS prototype that reduces hydrogen refuelling costs, meets AFIR requirements, and accelerates zero-emission fleets throughout European cities.
