EIT Urban Mobility presents study on non-exhaust emissions at the New Mobility Congress in Katowice

17 September 2025

The New Mobility Congress (KNM) in Metropolis GZM – Upper Silesian-Zagłębie Metropolitan Area, Katowice. September 23 to 25, 2025

Highlighting innovation and research: Presentation of the EIT Urban Mobility study on Non-exhaust Emissions – Presentation on 25 September from 11.25 to 11.40 at Urban Stage.

A key highlight of the Congress will be the premiere of a new report titled “Non-exhaust Emissions in Road Transport,” conducted by EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union and e:misia with London as a case study. The research reveals that non-exhaust emissions (particles released from brake, tyre, and road surface wear) have become the main source of particulate pollution from road transport, surpassing emissions from exhaust fumes. The findings provide crucial insights into urban air pollution and offer directions for effective mitigation strategies.

The study emphasises that reducing car use, along with technological improvements such as wear-resistant components and targeted policy measures—such as expanding low-emission zones, lowering speed limits, and penalising heavier vehicles—could lead to substantial environmental benefits. It underscores the need for multiple measures, including behavioural changes like increased use of public transport and active mobility options. Moreover, the report advocates for harmonised standards across Europe to improve measurement and regulation of non-exhaust emissions, enabling more coordinated policy responses.

Yoann Le Petit, Thought Leadership Manager at EIT Urban Mobility: “This research highlights the urgent need for cities to adopt coordinated, multi-level strategies to address non-exhaust emissions, which are a critical but often overlooked source of urban air pollution. Cities have the opportunity—and the responsibility—to make a significant impact by implementing innovative policies and regulations.”

The largest event dedicated to sustainable transport in Central and Eastern Europe

The Congress’s programme is shaped by an expert group, of recognised international figures in urban planning, energy, and mobility. The event will also feature side activities such as the Innovation Forum, Hydrogen Suppliers Days, KNM Bike Show, and the Startup eHub—platforms for networking, collaboration, and showcasing new technologies.

“Cities in Central and Eastern Europe are advancing rapidly in sustainable urban mobility, from electrified public transport to active travel infrastructure. With new insights on non-exhaust emissions being presented at the Congress, this is a timely opportunity to bring together regional actors, share knowledge, and accelerate the transition towards cleaner and more inclusive transport systems,” said Traian Urban, Director Innovation Hub East, EIT Urban Mobility, who will moderate the high-level panel ‘Shaping Europe’s Industrial Competitiveness’ on 24 September from 16:30 to 17:15 at New Mobility Stage.

As the largest event dedicated to sustainable transport in Central and Eastern Europe, the Congress will feature nearly 180 programme sessions—including debates, workshops, and presentations—and the region’s largest sustainable transport expo with over 150 exhibitors showcasing the latest innovations across 12,000 square meters.
