The Resilient Cities Summer School, part of the Central Europe Summer School project, orchestrates a dynamic two-week educational programme from 8 to 19 July 2024, spanning the cities of Bratislava and Ljubljana. This initiative brings together students, professionals, and anyone interested in the topic to explore the challenges of city resilience and devise innovative solutions. Utilising innovative teaching methodologies such as challenge-based and active learning, the summer school offers daily sessions filled with engaging activities. These include talks by industry professionals, collaborative teamwork exercises, and entrepreneurial challenges to foster creativity and problem-solving skills.
Partnering with five mobility companies, the summer school focuses on addressing pressing urban mobility issues within the framework of resilient cities. Participants tackle real-world challenges related to sustainable transportation, alleviating traffic congestion, and integrating new mobility technologies into urban environments.
Through this immersive experience, participants gain valuable insights into the complexities of urban resilience and develop practical solutions to enhance cities’ sustainability and adaptability in the face of various challenges.

Week 1 – Foundations of Urban Resilience
Kicking off in Bratislava, the first week is a deep dive into the complexities of urban resilience. Commencing with orientation and team-building exercises, participants warm up to the programme and each other, setting the stage for an inclusive learning environment. The following days are packed with interactive sessions exploring urban mobility issues and formulating business strategies through challenge-based learning. Participants will partake in market analyses and solution development workshops, steering their creative energies towards tangible outcomes. In tandem, they’ll benefit from the insights of industry professionals, ensuring a practical edge to their theoretical undertakings.
Week 2 – Strategising and Proposition
Transitioning to Ljubljana, the focus sharpens on strategic business plan development and start-up mentorship. Here, the participants pivot from ideation to the implementation of their resilient city concepts, engaging in proposal development and fine-tuning their pitches with expert guidance. The programme crescendos with a series of pitch preparations, leading to the presentation of fully-fledged business plans to a discerning panel of experts. Participants are encouraged to weave ethical, societal, and environmental considerations into their proposals, culminating in an awards ceremony that recognises the most innovative and impactful solutions.
The Resilient Cities Summer School is an empowering platform, going beyond academia to instill participants with the know-how and boldness to envisage and instigate real-world urban transformation. By the end of the fortnight, each participant transitions from a learner to an urban innovator, equipped with critical skills to champion the cause of city resilience.
