MaaS for Italy

Event details

MaaS for Italy is the Italian Government’s project to test the mobility of the future across the country. It is coordinated by the Department for Digital Transformation with the support of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.

The project is funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and the Complementary Fund as part of the Digital Italy 2026 strategy.

MaaS4Italy aims to test the Mobility as a Service (MaaS) paradigm across the country, as well as autonomous, cooperative and connected mobility (CCAM) solutions within city laboratories.

The project aims to address three key areas:

  • Test the MaaS paradigm: through the introduction of digital platforms, new business models, data sharing and interaction between different providers of mobility services, assessing the impact on the environment and the socioeconomic context;
  • Create an open platform for mobility data: a technological infrastructure capable of ensuring effective interaction between the various sector operators and offering a single national access point for all data relating to transport and mobility offerings;
  • Encourage the digitalisation of local public transport: to promote the deployment of MaaS in selected areas, enabling digital payment services, user information systems, and travel booking services.

MaaS for Italy also envisions the creation of two Living Labs on the topic of autonomous and connected mobility to test innovative solutions that can be integrated into the MaaS paradigm. The cities selected to host the Living Labs are Milan and Turin. Initial testing phases have rolled out across several key cities and regions, allowing users to combine different transport operators without managing separate tickets.

The results of the project will be presented in a closed event (upon invitation only) taking place in Rome on 23 June 2026. This event will gather ministries, cities, regions, MaaS operators and mobility providers. EIT Urban Mobility will participate in a panel to steer the discussion among countries and regions working on MaaS in Europe, compare our experiences and reflect on common challenges.
