In many cities, efforts are being made to reduce speed limits. However, the success of physical measures, behaviour-change campaigns, and enforcement often falls short of expectations. In fact, many areas are becoming more congested, with faster, larger, and heavier vehicles on public roads, and drivers are increasingly distracted. Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) offers an effective solution, but implementing ISA on the streets requires overcoming numerous barriers.
Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) can limit vehicle speeds, providing not only a safety solution but also an opportunity to rethink the use of public roads. While ISA is often discussed in the context of smart cars (using cameras and maps), the real solution lies in ISA ‘for road managers.’ This involves creating geofencing zones where different speed limits are dynamically enforced on various types of vehicles.
At the EIT Urban Mobility Discovery Day on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam, we aim to develop constructive practical experiments to test the potential of ISA. We are looking for experiments to:
- Explore future use cases
- Investigate responsible implementation of ISA
- Evaluate the broader societal impact
The experiments will combine location, vehicle type, and target group. Examples include a company’s fleet, delivery services in a residential area, the vicinity of primary schools, or applications in car-sharing services. These scalable examples can make a significant impact. The protocols will be developed through practical and interdisciplinary research. Digital tools will enable the management of inclusive public spaces and the realization of safer public areas. We see daily that relying solely on physical measures, campaigns, or enforcement is not sufficient.
