The EIT Urban Mobility’s Academic Research Board (ARB) is an external high-level group composed of leading experts in transport and mobility research from across Europe and beyond. The ARB supports EIT Urban Mobility’s mission by identifying critical knowledge gaps, shaping priority research directions, and offering evidence-based insights to guide policy, innovation and education.
The board’s work aims to identify present and future gaps in urban mobility research. By aligning future research priorities with real-world needs, the ARB aims to contribute to building more sustainable, equitable, and resilient cities in Europe.
While EIT Urban Mobility does not conduct research itself, the Academic Research Board (ARB) was created to foster closer ties with the research community. The ARB offers an independent perspective on emerging research gaps in urban mobility and aims to inform future research directions relevant to European cities and policy agendas.
Led by Professor Giovanni Circella, the Academic Research Board brings together renowned researchers, policy experts, and institutional leaders. Board members have shaped national and international transport agendas and continue to play key roles in science-policy dialogues.
The initiative is coordinated by EIT Urban Mobility and supported by a team of programme and editorial experts.
An expert in infrastructure economics and policy, Cecilia leads global research on urban mobility, access, and infrastructure finance. She brings experience from numerous transport reform and investment projects in emerging economies.
Irina is a leading figure in transport engineering and policy in Latvia, with expertise in smart mobility, transport planning, and digital innovation in urban systems. She has led large-scale European transport and education projects.
Peter is a globally recognised academic in travel behaviour, public transport policy, and accessibility. He advises local and national governments across Europe on sustainable urban mobility strategies.
Tatiana has extensive experience in intelligent transport systems and mobility innovation. She also leads policy dialogue on digitalisation and smart mobility at European level.
Barbara is a prominent transport researcher with deep expertise in freight, automation, and mobility futures. She advises national and EU bodies on strategic transport policy and innovation.
Neil brings extensive leadership in transport research from the U.S., with particular focus on strategic planning, mobility systems, and cross-disciplinary collaboration between governments, academia, and industry.
A global leader in sustainable mobility, Dan’s work focuses on electric vehicles, shared mobility, and low-carbon transport transitions. He has advised UN agencies, national governments, automotive and energy companies, and city coalitions.
Lóri is a leading scholar in freight transport systems design and modelling. His work supports public and private actors in creating innovative, sustainable and resilient logistics systems.
George specialises in road safety, transport modelling, and behaviour analysis. He leads several European research projects on sustainable urban mobility and traffic systems.
The ARB’s first annual report provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the most pressing research needs in urban mobility over the next ten years. The report identifies five major topic areas that must be addressed to support Europe’s sustainability and equity goals:
These themes are examined through the lens of systemic pressures on transport systems and the levers for implementation — governance, regulation, pricing, and urban planning — as well as the cross-cutting role of technology.
