CAISE

AI-powered platform helping shared mobility and demand-responsive operators coordinate with public transport, reducing disruption response time and improving multimodal connectivity.

Project summary

Cities across Europe face fragmented transport networks with poor first- and last-mile connectivity, pushing users toward private cars and increasing congestion and emissions. Shared mobility and demand-responsive transport (DRT) operators struggle to coordinate their services with public transport (PT) conditions, service disruptions and changing demand patterns.

Context-Aware Intelligence for Shared Mobility and Public Transport (CAISE) addresses this gap with a digital platform that combines fleet data with contextual information such as PT conditions, weather and local events to generate clear, actionable recommendations. These support both pre-deployment decisions, such as service area planning, and post-deployment actions, such as fleet rebalancing and disruption response.

The project is led by CARNET-UPC (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya), which coordinates the overall work plan, pilot assessment and dissemination. SWITCH, a European technology startup, develops and owns the underlying agentic AI platform. Wayla acts as primary operational partner, providing real-world requirements and validation. Lime supports the initiative through a letter of support as an operational partner in the German pilot cities.

CAISE runs from July 2026 to June 2027 and is demonstrated in three cities: Turin, Berlin and Munich. The pilots aim to reduce operator reaction time in PT disruptions from around 2 hours to under 10 minutes, cut time spent on contextual mobility analysis by 75%, and increase fleet utilisation during disruptions by 10-15%.

In the short term, CAISE improves operational efficiency for mobility operators. In the medium term, it enhances the travel experience for end users. Finally, in the long term, it supports more sustainable and resilient urban mobility across Europe.

Context

Fragmented transport networks and poor first/last-mile connectivity push users toward private cars, worsening congestion and emissions, and reducing public transport ridership.

Challenge

CAISE combines fleet and contextual data (PT status, weather, events) into a single platform that generates real-time operational and strategic recommendations.

Expected outcome

Faster disruption response, improved fleet utilisation, stronger multimodal connections, and a market-ready commercialised platform for mobility operators across Europe.
