BIBO Next

Public transport without ticketing hassle: just hop on and ride. Journeys are detected automatically and the right fare calculated – with no check-in or extra hardware.

Project summary

Public transport often requires passengers to understand complex ticketing systems or actively check in before travelling, creating barriers and reducing attractiveness. BIBO Next takes Mobile Pay-As-You-Go (MPAYG) ticketing to the next level by removing the need for passengers to actively interact with their smartphone when travelling. The project develops and validates a Be-In/Be-Out (BIBO) mobile ticketing solution that automatically detects journeys and calculates the correct fare without manual interaction. Passengers can simply board, travel and leave public transport without buying or validating a ticket. The solution is fully smartphone-based and does not rely on additional in-vehicle hardware such as beacons. This makes it easier and more cost-efficient for transport authorities to deploy. Developed by FAIRTIQ in cooperation with public transport authorities in Germany (RMV) and the Czech Republic (IDZK), the solution will be tested in real-life operations across transport systems and regulatory environments. By the end of the project, a market-ready BIBO solution will be launched, improving convenience for passengers and supporting sustainable urban mobility in Europe.
