STREAM (School Traffic Route Evaluation and Aggregation Method) in Berlin

STREAM develops a data-driven platform to model highly frequented school routes, enabling Berlin to identify traffic patterns, improve child safety and optimise planning.

Project summary

The project STREAM (School Traffic Route Evaluation and Aggregation Method) addresses a major urban mobility challenge in the pilot city of Berlin: how to understand and safeguard the daily trips of all school children across 900 Berlin schools. The Initiative for Safer Roads is an experienced player in road safety and traffic data analysis and brings safety on Berlin school routes to a new level.

Traditional surveys used to analyse school routes are costly and time-consuming. The STREAM project proposes a digital, data-driven solution that models highly frequented school routes using statistical methods and multiple mobility datasets. The result is a cloud-based platform displaying school routes on a map and related statistics detailing frequencies, modal split and age groups, among other factors. This enables cities to prioritise road safety measures, support active mobility and reduce planning efforts. The solution will be validated with the City of Berlin through modelling and verification using radar-based traffic measurements while also conducting user testing with city authorities and schools during a final demonstration phase until December 2026.

Context

Berlin faces the challenge of safeguarding school journeys for 400,000 children across 900 schools. Traditional route surveys are costly, time-consuming and difficult to scale.

Challenge

STREAM addresses the challenge by using data-driven modelling and mobility datasets to identify school routes, enabling cities to plan targeted safety measures efficiently.

Expected outcome

STREAM will deliver a cloud-based platform enabling evidence-based school route planning to improve child safety, promote active mobility and reduce planning effort by over 50%.
