IMPULSE+

Integrated e-bus power management for optimised transport operations

Project summary

Inspired by the urgent need to accelerate the electrification of public transport while ensuring that PTOs can efficiently manage their fleets, the IMPULSE+ project builds on the successful deployment of the realCity platform with Carris, Lisbon’s Public Transport Operator (PTO) as part of the IMPULSE project. Following the demonstrated improvements in electric fleet monitoring from the realCity platform, Carris expressed interest in scaling and enhancing the solution to support broader operational needs and additional vehicle types.

The IMPULSE+ project focuses on three main developments:

  • Integrating 14 KARSAN mini eBuses which have a distinct system into the platform. Integration of distinct fleet types into the same operations-support system without manufacturer imposed constraints will increase the scalability of the solution
  • Incorporating electric bus charger data will make it possible to track the evolution fo the charging process adn better estimate the State of Charge (SOC) at hte start of the service, enhancing realCity’s predictions and accuracey of the end of day SOC that will allow dispatchers to detect and respond to any potential problems.
  • Connecting complementary operational data sources to enhance dispatcher awareness, and increase predictive accuracy and decision-making capabilities.

Context

Reducing service interruptions, risks, and operational costs for public transport operators managing e-bus fleets

Challenge

IMPULSE will provide a platform capable of optimising e-bus fleet management across distinct fleet types, using real-time data about batteries’ status and charger data.

Expected outcome

Improved operational efficiency, service reliability, energy optimisation, and scalable electric fleet management supporting long-term digitalisation and emissions reduction goals.
