Real-time navigation guidance is an essential element of modern life, yet many individuals continue to face challenges in navigating complex environments – especially indoors. While satellite navigation (Sat Nav) serves as an effective tool for driver navigation and, to some extent, outdoor pedestrian navigation, indoor navigation remains a largely unsolved problem. This problem is exacerbated for people with visual impairments and other disabilities, who face additional challenges navigating the built environment.
Waymap aims to solve this problem by providing accurate, accessible indoor-outdoor pedestrian navigation. The Waymap mobile app delivers step-by-step guidance indoors, outdoors and deep underground, enabling users to confidently and independently navigate complex environments. Waymap connects indoor and outdoor journeys seamlessly, offering a full door-to-door navigation experience. The app offers step-level accuracy within mapped venues, and includes various accessibility features such as hands-free audio instructions, on-screen map visuals with written instructions and step-free routing options. Waymap’s industry-leading accuracy and advanced accessibility features promote inclusive mobility for all users, especially those with disabilities. Through this project, the Waymap app will be deployed in selected Transport for London (TfL) underground tube stations. Once deployed, passengers will be able to use Waymap’s mobile application to receive accurate step-by-step navigation guidance throughout the selected stations – from entrance to platform and beyond. This will significantly enhance station accessibility and improve wayfinding for all users, including tourists, first-time visitors and people with a wide range of disabilities. Waymap’s precise, effective routing capabilities will also help to improve the efficiency of mobility within the selected stations for all users, reducing congestion and contributing to an improved overall customer experience. Over time, the enhanced accessibility and improved customer experience of public transport will result in increased usage, reducing carbon emissions from drivers and taxis.
