FabenodeIoT

Monitoring of driver stress and drowsiness to enhance safety in public transport
INVAMAR driver safety solution

Project summary

FabenodeIoT introduces a revolutionary smart textile steering wheel cover, equipped with clinical-grade biomedical sensors for 24/7 driver health monitoring. Unlike existing camera-based systems, FabenodeIoT is fully GDPR-compliant, as it directly collects physiological data through touch, avoiding the use of biometric imagery. This ensures both accuracy and privacy, making it a superior alternative for municipalities prioritising data security. The system also monitors driver compliance with safe driving practices, such as maintaining both hands on the wheel.

Currently in the alpha state and validated through paid demos in passenger cars, FabenodeIoT has proven its feasibility in real-world scenarios. This new proof-of-concept aims to further enhance the technology by advancing it to the beta phase, making it ready for large-scale public transport applications.

In the short term, the solution reduces accident risks, enhances decision-making for municipalities and improves adherence to safety protocols. In the medium term, it enables data-driven driver workload management, reduces costs associated with accidents and fosters public trust in transit systems. In the long term, FabenodeIoT facilitates systemic safety transformations, supports sustainable urban mobility and positions Europe as a leader in ethical safety innovations. With a pilot phase in local public transport and scalability across Europe, FabenodeIoT sets a new standard for safer, smarter and privacy-compliant urban transportation.

Context

Road crashes cause €160 billion in financial losses in the EU and are responsible for 1.19 million deaths globally. Of these crashes, 95% stem from driver error. Public transport lacks real-time, privacy-compliant stress monitoring.

Challenge

FabenodeIoT’s smart textile steering wheel cover monitors heart rate, stress, drowsiness via touch base, delivering GDPR-compliant, real-time, clinically accurate driver safety data.

Expected outcome

Expected results include 60% fewer accidents, €80 billion in economic savings, reduced CO2, and scalable, privacy-first deployment for inclusive, resilient and safer public mobility.
