STELION Powertrain

Hybrid fuel cell system for decarbonisation of refrigerated transport and logistics

Project summary

The project aims to adapt Hydros Power’s STELION Powertrain module to refrigerated containers (reefers) at the Port of Valencia, improving the autonomy and sustainability of refrigerated transport in port environments. This sector faces significant challenges in transitioning to greener mobility due to the high energy demand of refrigeration systems and the limitations of conventional batteries, particularly on long trips.

Inspired by the urgent need to decarbonise refrigerated transport, both by road and rail, we aim to offer an innovative solution based on green hydrogen. This technology not only enhances the energy efficiency of reefer containers but also helps reduce emissions and noise. Consequently, it enables operations in urban areas and complies with the strictest environmental regulations.

The project will be carried out in collaboration with Grupo Torres, a leading logistics operator, and the Port Authority of Valencia, which will facilitate real-world testing of the system under operational conditions. The Valenciaport Foundation is also supporting the project by providing hydrogen for the tests. Key activities include the design and adaptation of our STELION Powertrain module to fit reefer container structures, followed by performance testing for two weeks at the Port of Valencia. This project has the potential to transform the European refrigerated transport sector, expanding the adoption of hydrogen as a clean energy source throughout the logistics value chain.
