and take your mobility startup to the next level!

The ScaleTHENGlobal is a EU-funded programme with pan-European dimension implemented through EIT Urban Mobility partners. We are looking for the most promising urban mobility startups with innovative solutions tackling city challenges.

ScaleTHENGlobal supports startups in scaling-up their business in Europe, driving growth and going international. We are also looking for startups from outside Europe willing to expand their business in the European ecosystem related to urban mobility.

Selected startups get promoted at Business Creation webpage with their profile, and through EIT Urban Mobility communication channels.

Up to €50,000 (per applicant) off additional funding will be offered to the three best pilot projects. European startups will have to demonstrate appropriateness and suitability to pilot a project with EIT Urban Mobility collaborating cities.

ScaleTHENGlobal also offers access to EIT Urban Mobility Business Creation investment initiatives and funding instruments.

Programme & partners


The EIT Urban Mobility ScaleTHENGlobal programme for 2021 includes:

  • Selection of 20 mature urban mobility startups that will constitute the pool of ScaleTHENGlobal participants.
  • €20k woth of support services provided by programme partners.
  • An internal selection process will offer to the best 3 European startups up to €50,000 for performing a pilot with a partner city.
  • Participants will have access to EIT Urban Mobility networks and cities' innovation projects.
  • For global outreach, the program organizes trips for ScaleTHENGlobal members looking to expand their activities beyond Europe.
  • Access to external events such as Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC2021) and ITS World Congress 2021 in Hamburg.
  • 5 non-european startups will have a dedicated internalization package as part of the event.

Who should apply?


Eligibility criteria
To participate in the EIT Urban Mobility ScaleTHENGlobal programme you need to fulfil the following eligibility criteria:

  • Startup must be incorporated in EU or EIT Urban Mobility participating countries. The registration certificate will be required to participate in the program.
  • A team (NOT a single founder) with at least 2 FTEs
  • Founders and employees (e.g. ESOP) should still own more than 75% of shares.
  • None of the shareholdings are outside EU or Urban Mobility participating countries.
  • Clear, scalable business idea, in line with strategic priorities of EIT Urban Mobility.
  • Duly justified TRL 7-9 (*more information here).
  • Demonstrated revenue generated from customers, preferably €100k in the last fiscal year.
  • Track record on pilot activities with cities, already ongoing or with a strong potential.
  • Minimum € 1 billion addressable market.
  • Fit with City Club Challenges as described in KIC Urban Mobility Strategic Agenda in Business Plan for 2021:
    1. Shift to active modes of transport
    2. Avoid negative health, safety and environment impacts of urban mobility 
    3. Improve urban logistics
    4. Improve public transport
    5. Improve the quality of public space
    6. Improve traffic flow management
    7. Avoid transition barriers
  • Full submission of application including all required fields.

If we are not allowed to travel and to participate in face to face events due to the current COVID-19 situation, how is the programme structured to solve this?

ScaleTHENGlobal will run adaptative programme to minimise impact of European restrictions due to COVID-19 to selected startups. Programmes will include digital offerings, virtual workshops, networking events… that can be joined via video-calls and networking tools. Programme management will plan the programme and curriculum accordingly based on the published and applicable local and international policies and guidelines.
