The EIT Urban Mobility Accelerator is a EU-funded programme in five European regional hubs implemented through partners to take early-stage mobility startups to the next level. We are looking for early-stage startup-teams with business ideas that reduce congestion and increase efficiency in the transport system. With innovative approaches to make commuting faster or more enjoyable. With concepts to accelerate the transition to low- or zero-emission forms of transport – and with all other possible ideas that help to solve mobility-related problems.

Programme


The EIT Urban Mobility Acceleration programme is designed to offer early stage startups
from EU plus EIT participating countries:

  • €15k Grants for each participating startup through “Finance2Move
  • Individualized business coaching & training
  • Mentoring by industry experts and experienced founders as companions
  • Get access to your first customers
  • Validate your technology and market (PoCs with cities)
  • Find your product-market fit
  • Scaling the business
  • Access to local ecosystems & infrastructure to drive growth and internationalisation
  • Get investor ready and establish contact to investors & VCs/funds
  • Get listed on the EIT Urban Mobility Startup Map and appear in the database
  • Potential convertible loan of (up to €60.000 and more) for selected startups

Due to COVID-19 our curriculum has been restructured and all workshops will be available virtually with online sessions and events.
There usually are coachings, input sessions and events each week (mostly optional depending on your needs).

Who should apply?

We are looking for early-stage startups from EU plus EIT participating countries (incl. RIS countries) with a properly validated, clear, scalable and innovative business idea that solves a mobility-related customer problem. 

Teams must consist one of at least two founders, with minimum 1 founder pursuing the startup full-time and at least 2 FTE in total. Founders (incl. employees; ESOP) should still own more than 70% of shares.  

The startup has to be incorporated and can have accumulated up to a maximum of 1m EUR revenue (over startup lifetime).

How do I apply to the EIT Urban Mobility Accelerator programme?

The call for applications for Batch #2 of the EIT Urban Mobility Business Creation Accelerator programme will start in early October 2020 and the application deadline is on 15 November 2020. Final startup selection will be completed in mid-December 2020.

To apply to Batch #2, you will initially need to submit your application on the central application page linked on the Accelerator website:
https://www.eiturbanmobility.eu/accelerator/

If your application is successful, you will be invited to pitch before an independent jury after which you will be notified about your selection for the Accelerator programme.

What Partner will my startup join for the Accelerator programme?

Startups can only apply in one Hub/region per programme cycle. By default, the startups will be geographically allocated to the Hub that matches its headquarter (well-founded exceptions are possible). You can find the list of countries for your Hub in the FAQ below.

If your startup is located in the city of one of the partners, you are automatically allocated to a partner in your city.

What are Innovation Hubs for Acceleration? Who can I contact in case of questions?

There are five Innovation Hubs across Europe that offer the EIT Urban Mobility Business Creation Accelerator programme and each of these Innovation Hubs is comprised of partners who will provide you, the startups, with the Accelerator programme:

Which type of acceleration services does each Partner offer?

If you are selected for the EIT Urban Mobility Accelerator programme you will receive 15.000€ equity-free funding for your startup, regardless of which Hub and Partner you have been assigned to. Other acceleration services offered by the Partners are:

  • 6-month Accelerator programme
  • 1-on-1 Business Coaching/ Mentoring
  • Startup Workshops & Education
  • 6-months of Co-working Space/ Office Space
  • Direct access to “Living Labs” & Cities

The spectrum of acceleration services offered by the individual Partners varies. For details of the individual acceleration activities by Hub and by Partner you will find the contact details of each Hub manager here. Please reach out to them in case of questions.

Are there any restrictions when and on what the grant funding can be used for?

To receive the 15.000 € grant you need to have signed the sub grant agreement (SGA) documents which specify the use of those funds. Personnel costs, expert services and other direct costs (travel, goods and services) can be included. The equity-free funding can be partially used as a travel budget to visit Partner locations e.g. for workshops, networking events or demo days and general business development activities. The timeframe to spend the money covered under the SGA is restricted by the Accelerator programme duration of the respective batch (exceptions may apply).

How does the allocation to Innovation Hubs by country work? Which countries are “eligable”?

Below you will find a list of eligible European countries and the Innovation Hub you will be assigned to, based on the location of your startup’s headquarters. If your country has several Partners, you may choose the Partner based on the Partner’s services that will benefit you most.

  • Central: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Germany (South / West), Italy, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, Slovenia, Switzerland, Turkey
  • North: Denmark, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Finland, Germany (North), Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland (North), Sweden
  • East: Armenia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Germany (East), Hungary, Israel, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Ukraine
  • South: Albania, Armenia, Cyprus, France (South), Italy, Kosovo, Malta, North Macedonia, Portugal, Spain
  • West: Belgium, France (North), Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, United Kingdom

Am I eligible for the EIT Urban Mobility Accelerator programme and what is the criteria for startup selection?

Maximum Eligibility criteria

  • Startups should have received less than 1m EUR revenue (accumulated over startup lifetime).
  • No more than max. 5% of your shares are held outside of the eligible countries (no detailed cap table needed).

Note: EIT UM will provide direct access to more mature startups to the EIT Urban Mobility Scale-up Hub .

Minimum Eligibility criteria

To participate in the EIT Urban Mobility Accelerator programme you need to fulfil the following eligibility criteria:

  • A team with at least 2 FTE (NOT a single founder): minimum 1 team member pursuing the startup fulltime (not necessarily connected to monetary compensation).
  • Founders and employees (e.g. ESOP) should still own more than 70% of shares.
  • A clear, scalable business idea
  • Properly validated (TRL 4 – 7*)
  • Already incorporated in EU or EIT participating countries
  • Minimum €1bn addressable market
  • FIT with EIT UM City Club Challenges**:
    1. Shift to active modes of transport (walking & cycling)
    2. Avoid negative health, safety and environment impacts of urban mobility
    3. Improve urban logistics with a focus on last mile distribution
    4. Improve public transport service provision
    5. Improve the quality of public space
    6. Improve traffic flow management (incl. ITS)
    7. Avoid transition barriers Teams will be asked to elaborate on their fit and potential to do proof of concepts/ pilot projects related to the City Club Challenges as part of the online application
  • FIT with EIT UM Accelerator programme: Teams will be asked to elaborate how they will engage and contribute to the Accelerator programme

What are the steps in the Evaluation & Selection Process for the Accelerator programme?

Step 1 – Online review

  • Written applications are reviewed by four evaluators each based on standardized set of criteria.
  • Result: 10 -12 startups per region and batch are invited for live pitches (step 2).

Step 2 – Online and offline pitch events

10 – 12 live pitches are reviewed by a jury (odd number of participants) consisting of:

  • 1-2 EIT UM representatives (from BC or IH team)
  • A city representative from a IH member city
  • 1-2 representatives from the implementing consortium
  • Judging based on standardized set of criteria

If we are not allowed to travel and to participate in face to face events due to the current COVID-19 situation, how is the programme structured to solve this?

All Hubs and accelerator partners will be offering fully digital, virtual workshops, networking events and demo days that can be joined via video-calls and networking tools. Programme management will plan the programme and curriculum accordingly based on the published and applicable local and international guidelines. For Q1 and Q2 2021, the duration of the EIT Urban Mobility Accelerator programme batch #2, we currently plan with 100% remote accessibility for all input sessions, workshops and events.

What steps are necessary in UM7 to submit an application quickly and successfully?

  • Login to UM7 or register yourself: https://um7.eu/registration/new.
  • Navigate to “Companies" (https://um7.eu/companies) to create your company profile (click “+ Create"). Fill in all info and click “Save" at the bottom. If you want to edit this data again you can still click on “Edit". (Optional: On your company profile you can invite contributing team members or upload a product demo or video under the “Files" tab.)
  • Navigate to “EIT UM Programmes" and click on the programme you want to apply to (here: EIT Urban Mobility Accelerator programme with the 15 Nov 2020 deadline). You can check the questions you will need to fill out. Click on the green “Apply…" button to choose the company you want to apply with.
    On the created programme application draft, click on the tab “questions & answers" to fill those out by clicking on the blue button “edit answers". Fill out all answers. Those answers are saved automatically. Once you finish a green notification will appear at the bottom and you can click on “Back to application form".
  • Upload your pitch deck (optimally in a PDF format with max. 15 slides) in the tab “Pitch Deck". This is mandatory to complete the process.

Once you have completed all of the above steps the “Submit" button will turn green and you can submit your application (Hint: if you want to navigate back to your application you can find it under the tab “Drafts".)

After clicking “Submit" you will find your application under “Submitted".

You are done and we will contact you after our evaluation phase has concluded.
